The use of the self-portrait is my diary in a visual format. It is a way to express my experiences, thoughts and emotions as well as to record my own personal stories. Some images are seen singular in a piece, a reference to a frozen moment in time. Some figures cohabitate a space together, creating layers of stories, interwoven together.
Once I have determined the idea and set-up for a piece, I photograph myself in the position and use this as a reference for the drawing. In drawing the figure, I pay attention to line, form and space. I like to explore how the figure sits in the space created around it. Is there a suggestion of the room beyond the edges of the drawing? Color choice is important: how will the thread color used to embroider the figure play off the color of the background? Importance is given to thickness of thread and types of stiches in order to create or maintain a certain line quality or texture. And I continue to look at the overall composition and how all the elements will ultimately work together.
